Early pregnancy diagnosis of cows: the economic importance of using B-ultrasound machine for cattle examination

2024-09-19 11:32:56 Visits:

Early pregnancy diagnosis using ultrasound machines for cattle is crucial for effective management of pregnant animals and early submission of non pregnant animals for subsequent breeding to shorten the interval between calving and conception. Transrectal ultrasound examination is used to diagnose whether cows (n=47) are pregnant at 30 and 45 days after reproduction. On the 30th day, sensitivity and specificity were found to be 92.30% and 97.05%, respectively, and a re examination was conducted on the 45th day to confirm pregnancy. On the 30th day after mating, pregnancy positive animals were found to have significantly high concentrations of plasma progesterone (>3ng/ml) on the 20th day after mating through ultrasound scanning. Compared with rectal examinations usually conducted on the 45th and 60th day after mating, using ultrasound examination for pregnancy diagnosis 30 days after artificial insemination can reduce the open days by 15 and 30 days, respectively. Every additional day of empty cows results in a day of loss (in terms of feeding and milk costs).

Identifying non pregnant animals in the latest ear after breeding is crucial for maintaining optimal calving intervals. Early pregnancy diagnosis after fertilization can help better manage pregnant animals and submit non pregnant animals as early as possible for subsequent reproduction. Although various methods such as non estrus, estimation of progesterone in blood or milk, and ultrasound examination have been used to diagnose whether cows are pregnant, rectal examination within 45-60 days after mating is still the most commonly used method for pregnancy diagnosis, especially under field conditions. It is difficult to determine pregnancy before 45 days through rectal examination. Ultrasound examination provides a wide range for early pregnancy diagnosis. In addition, estimating early embryo death cases that may be misdiagnosed as pregnancy through serum progesterone can be more accurately detected through ultrasound examination. Although it is uncertain whether delaying the identification of non pregnant animals after breeding will result in economic losses, there is limited information on quantitative estimates of such losses.

Transrectal ultrasound examination is performed 30 days after mating and repeated 45 days after mating for confirmation. The examiner maintains the standard procedure for ultrasound examination. Use a linear rectal probe for ultrasound scanning of the uterus and ovaries to diagnose and confirm pregnancy.

Due to the early use of animal B-ultrasound machines for pregnancy diagnosis, the number of days a cow is empty will be at least 15-30 days earlier than rectal palpation. Early use of ultrasound examination is an accurate method for identifying pregnant and non pregnant animals, which may help shorten the interval between calving and conception. The sensitivity and specificity of transrectal ultrasound performed at 30 days were 92.30% and 97.05%, respectively.
