The role of sheep B-ultrasound in general examination of sheep flocks

Sheep rumination is also called foaming. Healthy sheep usually start ruminating half an hour after feeding, and each rumination lasts for 30-40 minutes. Each food bolus is chewed about 50-70 times, and each rumination is about 6-8 times per day and night. Sick sheep will have reduced or abolished rumination.

Reduced rumination generally refers to the delay in the time of rumination after feeding, the shortening of each rumination time, and the reduction of the number of chewings of each food bolus. Reduced rumination will occur when diseases such as the forestomach and abomasum occur. When sheep use B-ultrasound to examine the rumen, it can be seen that the peristalsis of the rumen is reduced. Absence of rumination means that sick sheep do not ruminate for a long time. It is often seen in high fever, severe forestomach and abomasum diseases and intestinal diseases. When sheep use B-ultrasound to examine the rumen, it can be seen that the rumen has no peristalsis. In the process of these diseases, through treatment, if there is abstinence to the beginning of rumination, it means that the disease is in the recovery stage.

Examination of surface lymph nodes In the sheep body, we can touch several larger lymph nodes by hand to judge their size, hardness, temperature, sensitivity and activity. The healthy sheep lymph nodes that can be felt include the submandibular lymph nodes, the anterior shoulder lymph nodes, the anterior thigh lymph nodes, and the supramammary lymph nodes. During normal feeding, the Sheep B-ultrasound should be used to check the lymph node condition frequently. When sheep suffer from mastitis, the supramammary lymph nodes swell and feel hot and painful, and their volume increases when measured by sheep B-ultrasound. When suffering from tuberculosis, the lymph nodes swell and harden, without heat or pain. In sheep suffering from pseudotuberculosis, the surface lymph nodes swell and harden at the beginning, and then become purulent, with fluctuations when touched and pressed. The sheep B-ultrasound will show an abnormal echo structure, and finally a cheese-like substance will form in the lymph nodes, which can be squeezed out through the broken skin.
